Cut diesel duty plea
The Freight Transport Association wants the UK to halve diesel duty ahead of European Parliament plans to begin liberalising Europe's road freight market from 1 January 2009. The European Parliament recently voted on Commission proposals to ease the rules on cabotage - domestic work by a foreign trucker in another member state. These are restricted to casual work but under Commission plans, limited contract work would also be possible under cabotage until all restrictions stop on 1 January 2014. UK diesel duty rates in the UK are double those in the rest of Europe and the FTA worries that the new rules would allow foreign truckers to undercut UK operators and win more UK contracts.
